Ayurveda Teaching and Research Institute Bill passed in Rajya Sabha, was introduced by health minister, HarshVardhan on 16 Sep. 2020.
The Bill proposed that it will be merging the three institutes – the Institute of Post Graduate Teaching and Research in Ayurveda, Shree Gulabkunverba Ayurved Mahavidyalaya, Jamnagar, and the Institute of Ayurvedic Pharmaceutical Sciences, all in Jamnagar.
The proposed Institute in the Bill will be located in the campus of Gujarat Ayurveda University, Jamnagar. The Institute will be elaborate on the patterns of teaching in medical education in Ayurveda and pharmacy and it will be bringing together educational facilities for training of personnel in all branches of Ayurveda. It will attain self-sufficiency in postgraduate education to meet the need for specialists and medical teachers in Ayurveda, also make an in-depth study and research in the field of Ayurveda.
The institute will be announced an institution of national importance following the purpose of the bill and will be instrumental for the promotion of standard in education, research and training subjects in Ayurveda. The proposed institute will be located on the campus of Gujarat Ayurved University in Jamnagar. The bill earlier passed in the Lok Sabha’s budget session. Dr Harshvardhan introduced the bill in Parliament on 15 Sep 2020 on behalf of Ayush (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) minister Shripad Yesso Naik.
It is proposed that the enactment of the proposed bill will further provide self-rule to the institute to develop initials and patterns of teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate education in Ayurveda and Pharmacy. The synergies among the varied constituent institutions will help ITRA to represent high standards of education and to be as a guide institution to the entire AYUSH Sector. It is assumed to provide the highest level of training of personnel in all important branches of Ayurveda including Pharmacy, and to make up in-depth study and research and training in the field of Ayurveda.
ITRA will be the first institution with INI status in the AYUSH Sector, and this will provide the institution to be independent and innovative in the matter deciding course content and pedagogy. This decision of passing the bill comes at a time when global interest in health solutions based on traditional wisdom is at an unprecedentedly high level and ITRA is poised to take Ayurveda education to new vistas.
